South African Most Sought-After Photographer

Austin Malema (28) is the founder andย CEO of Pixel Kollective from South African. He was born in 1991 and grew up in a small village in venda called Tshiozwi just outside Louis Trichardt, where he was raised by his great-grandmother because his mom was a teenager. He moved to Joburg at the age of 12 to be with his mother. He fell in love with photography because of a relative who would take pictures of his family. This passion led him to pursue a career in photography. In 2012, on his 21st birthday instead of throwing a party to celebrate, he bought his first camera which cost R18,000. He began shooting at events, which led to more bookings and he realized that the lens gave him greater access to musicians, actors and prominent people.

In 2014, he got a job in the Television industry working on shows such as Skeem Sam, Selimathunzi, The Queen, The Real Jozi A-Listers. In mid-2015, he quit his job in the Television industry to be a full-time photographer. In 2016, his career as a full time photographer blossomed. He worked on projects such as shooting the South Africa Music Awards and Dineo Moeketsi becomes one of his clients

He has used social media as a platform to showcase his work and has managed to land many jobs through referrals. He also got job through building relationships which enabled him to reach out to clients. He has photographed for many brands globally and for events such as the South African Music Awards, the South African Film and Television Awards and the Global Citizen Festival.

In 2018, he founded Pixel media company. It is a photography, videography and content production agency. It aims at bridging the gap between photographers,videographers and consumers, as well as creating powerful and compelling content for brands and agencies across South Africa. Apart from his exposure, Malema has turned his passion for photography into a business. His biggest dream is for the company to represent young black photographers around South Africa.
